On April 3rd 2019, our Global Ambassador Dr. Christian de Vartavan, was invited by SMART DUBAI to participate to Dubai’s Blockchain Summit 2019 and act in no less than three capacities. First to give a keynote speech on how Blockchain can be of use to Creative Industries. Second, interview Ahmad Nassar, Chairman of the NFLPA, in other words the United States’ National Football League Players’ Association and third to chair a three guests’ panel of major players of the music industry. The panel aiming to discuss the very sensitive topic of ‘middlemen’ in Art.

During his ten minutes keynote speech Dr. de Vartavan outlined the various uses to which blockchain can be put where creative industries are concerned, ranging from smart contracts to centralize and ease payment of royalties. To track the use of the creative content wherever and whenever it is used on the web, citing PeerTracks as an example. To price each creative piece, and to price rightly, promoting efficient, dynamic pricing. To allow ‘micrometering’ or ‘micromonetizing’, digital music stores such as iTunes allow consumers to buy individual song tracks. Where Intellectual Property protection is concerned, to prove that an artist IS the author of the creation which is published under his name and to insure that should anyone claim otherwise this can be instantly disproved. Blockchain is a formidable tool in this respect as a hashed datestamp for a start on the chain allows a display of anteriority for any creation. Furthemore Blockchain can contribute to establish an artist’s reputation as after all it is about consensus. It can do this by linking reputations to specific “addresses” on the blockchain, thus allowing both producers and consumers of creative content to verify one another. This should encourage stronger collaboration and better behavior, by promoting cooperation for content creators and consumers alike. Participants who repeatedly don’t fulfill terms in a contract or try to game the system would have their actions recorded, acting as a deterrent against bad behavior. This is in fact the way PUBLIQ establishes reputation as a score is assigned to each creator expressing his reputation – or lack of it. PUBLIQ was of course cited and Dr. de Vartavan explained in detail how PUBLIQ’s ecosystem system redistributes 100% of the advertising revenue under blockchain control and monitoring. In other word under consensus. PUBLIQ, Dr de Vartavan pointed out, encourages creators to come onboard, henceforth stimulating the creative industries as well as the economy because providing those who need it most with a new way to be remunerated. This is about changing the way civil society works, and this why our non-profit foundation is called PUBLIQ. Finally Blockchain can establish transparent and trusted peer-to-peer transactions for whatever purpose. In this respect Dr. de Vartavan then invited his first guest to join him and demonstrate how blockchain is now harnessed to establish a deep relationship between players and fans. Thus allowing a direct continuum between his speech and the interview of the first panellist.

The interview of Mr Ahmed Nassar, which lasted about twenty minutes, covered a wide range of topics. Dr de Vartavan started by saying that the NFL is creating a new type of entertainment with Blockchain where anybody can be a sports announcer and be rewarded by the fans through Fanchain tokens. He then asked Ahmed Nassar to explain the project with Sports Cast and the current status and use-case. This partnership was not only described but additional questions were asked such as Why was NFL so determined to become an early implementer of Blockchain? What business improvements and real Return On Investment have you seen? Many Blockchain projects have failed to get beyond the Proof Of Concept stage – what was NFL secret to success if you consider it success? If so how do measure this Return On Investment? Mr Nassar’s answers were precise and direct. The interview ended with a frank hand shake and the audience later reported that it went very well indeed.  A recording of the interview was made which should be soon available from SMART DUBAI.

Thereafter Dr. de Vartavan invited the three panelists of the panel discussing ‘middlemen’ in Art, and in this particular case: Music. The guests were Scott Cohen, Chief Innovation Officer, Recorded Music, Warner Music Group, Panos A. Panay, Founder, Open Music Initiative and Pete Mathias, Business Development, Bertelsmann who is also an artist and lead drummer of the Filigar rock group. After welcoming them and a few questions Dr de Vartavan realized to his surprise that all three panelists were directly connected and shared common interests or professional connections. He hence decided to ask questions and let the panelists answer them without debating their answers further. The answers provided reflect the state of mind of the music industry concerning artist remuneration. As Dr de Vartavan later pointed out, it is best for these to be directly listened from the recording which was made and will equally be available later. The statements and answers of Pete Mathias in particular, who unlike the two other guests is an artist, were particularly surprising. He further pointed out that if anything these answers show how much work needs be done for this industry to be more transparent and fairer. Platforms like PUBLIQ can contribute to this change.
